Secondary structure composition of proteins in PDB
- Author:
Burkhard Rost (rost@columbia.edu
- Title:
Analysing secondary structure composition of known structures
- Data set:
2481 sequence-unique chains from PDB (list in ASCII)
- Secondary structure assignment:
done by DSSP, with the following conversion:
helix = DSSP [HIG]
strand = DSSP [EB]
non-regular all other three DSSP states ([ST ])
- Two-thirds of all proteins in PDB have 50-65% regular secondary structure (helix, strand).
results
- Secondary structure composition is length-independent, however, proteins shorter than 70 residues vary more in their regular secondary structure than longer proteins.
results
- There are no well-defined clusters separating all-alpha from all-beta from alpha/beta or alpha-beta proteins.
